State Testing: To the Parents of students in grades 3 through 8 State Testing

To the Parents of students in grades 3 through 8:

The New York State Education Department will shortly begin its spring testing for English Language Arts and mathematics grades 3 to 8.  While you have received communication from your child’s principal there are several points that I would like to emphasize.

Our school district has had one of the highest rates of test refusals (opt outs) in Dutchess County.  While we have respected the right of parents to make the decision not to have their student test, the consequences of high percentages of refusals have increased significantly.

At the insistence of parents, teachers and school officials the state has made changes to the testing program. While we would have liked to see more modifications, the changes that were made were significant.

Snow Days Snow Days

I would like to bring you up to date on our snow day situation.  Originally we had four snow days scheduled.  We added an additional snow day by attending school the Friday before President’s Day.  We have now used all five days.  If we have to close again we will attend school on the Friday before Memorial Day, May 26th. If we have to close two additional days we will have to attend school on the first day of spring recess April 10th. Please plan accordingly.

Our Pine Plains students have participated in creating artwork for a traveling exhibit that is designed to bring awareness to our national parks. We have 10 pieces of artwork that will travel across the country and be on display locally at the Roosevelt-Vanderbilt National Historic Site in Hyde Park NY during the month of April. Five students from Stissing Mountain High School Drawing and Painting classes as well as 7 group artworks created by our Studio in Art classes will be presented at this exhibit.
