Press Release

Pine Plains Superintendent of Schools Dr. Martin Handler announced today that he is investigating circumstances surrounding a failure on the part of the District’s Treasurer to timely submit payments for payroll taxes. While the taxes were paid, the untimely nature of payment led to penalties of which district administration and the Board of Education were unaware. The District Treasurer resigned her position after this matter was made known to the District’s Assistant Superintendent for Business. “I plan to fully brief the Board on this matter at next Wednesday’s Board of Education meeting” Dr. Handler said. To date, Dr. Handler has brought this matter to the attention of officials from the New York State Comptroller’s Office and has contacted the District’s insurance company to review coverage for the potential losses to the District. Dr. Handler stated that “I will explore every option to make the District financially whole and to review internal controls to avoid the potential for future late filings.”
