Mrs. Blackburn
My name is Jennifer Blackburn and this is my third year teaching Family and Consumer Science (Home and Careers). I teach grades 6-8 as well as high school electives such as Intro to Culinary, Intro to Design and have co-taught Food Science with our Ag Teacher, Steph Rhoades.
Prior to teaching, my background was in the Commercial Art field in Graphic Design.
I enjoy teaching all grade levels and focus on different skills in each grade.
6th Grade - character education, friendships, peer pressure, bullying, entrepreneurship, hand sewing and finally some basic cooking labs.
7th Grade - personality traits, career aptitude and research, workplace skills (including soft skills and hard skills), job interviews, resumes, machine sewing and community give back sewing projects
8th Grade - Interior Design (dream room project), color theory, the elements and princples of art and design, financial literacy, (checkbooks + budgets), cooking labs, and our final project, Food Truck Wars
Intro to Culinary - project and lab based class where students will mainly be in the kitchen
Intro to Design - a project-based, hands on course which will expose students to a variety of design subject areas including but not limited to: interior design - the application of the elements and principles of design in decorating, furniture arrangement and floor plans; textile design – the process of creating designs used for fabrics; fashion design – the art of applying design, aesthetics and natural beauty to clothing and its accessories; architectural design – the art and science of designing buildings and (some) non-building structures; and graphic design – the process of visual communication and problem-solving through the use of typography, photography and illustration.
